In July of 1620, the ship Speedwell traveled from Delftshaven in Holland to join the ship Mayflower at Southampton. After many delays, the two ships hoisted sail and began their voyage to the New World. The vessels had not traveled far when the Speedwell began to take on water and both ships put into Dartmouth to mend the leaks. The Speedwell was repaired and again they departed England only to turn back once more when the leaking grew more severe.
This final return to England was to the thriving port of Plymouth in Devonshire. It is in Plymouth in early September of 1620 that we have set our period dining experience. The Pilgrims reported that in Plymouth they "received many kindnesses from some Christians there." No doubt, a large part of these "kindnesses" included food and hospitality for the weary travelers.
This evening, we are very glad that you can share in the entertainment and hospitality that the Pilgrims found in Plymouth, England. As you sit down to a sumptuous dinner, costumed musicians will regale you with courtly and country songs of the period. During dinner, visit with the Mayflower passengers who will share the tales of their lives, and their hopes, dreams and fears for the New World. Perhaps you will be convinced to join them on their voyage to their new home . . .

Our modern Thanksgiving holiday is a blend of several earlier traditions: the harvest festival, the Puritan Day of Thanksgiving and Praise, and the commemoration of the 1620 Pilgrim landing known as Forefathers' Day. As it developed in New England in the 17th and 18th centuries, Thanksgiving Day was a special time set apart for church services followed by family or community dinners that generally occurred at harvest time. Thanksgiving Day took on its modern form when Abraham Lincoln declared the first of our modern annual and national Thanksgiving Days in 1863, and when interest shifted from the Pilgrims' wintry landing to their 1621 harvest celebration.
